Carol Ann SHINE is an award-winning producer who has produced over 50 titles for film and television and the Founder of The Blackhouse Foundation. A graduate of USC’s School of Cinema & Television, “SHINE,” as she is affectionately known in the industry, has focused her career on empowering marginalized communities.
Her credits include Blackbird starring Academy Award® winner Mo’Nique, I Am Legend starring Academy Award® nominee, Will Smith and the groundbreaking LOGO television series, “Noah’s Arc.”
History
History
After USC, SHINE worked as a producer on Black Like Who, Milk and Honey, Letter to My Mother and Kings. She also produced a series of shorts inspired by the network’s Soul Food TV series and directed by cast members, titled "The Great Commission," "Dense" and "Violation." In addition, SHINE produced "The Male Groupie," which premiered on HBO.
SHINE joined Tracey and Kenny “Babyface” Edmonds Entertainment Company to produce Patrik Ian Polk’s debut film, "Punks," which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival. After leaving Edmonds Entertainment, SHINE helped launch their e2 Filmworks Division as its Creative Executive.
SHINE worked with Jada Pinkett-Smith to consult and produce Ms. Pinkett-Smith’s directorial debut, The Human Contract, which premiered at Cannes. SHINE has also produced the features "All the Trappings of Success," "The Girls Room," "Dr. Benny," "Flip the Script," and "Gone." Recent credits include "The Skinny," "Sex and Violence! Or: A Brief Overview of Simple Physics," "Supermodel" and "Dirty Lies," which was also produced by Catherine Hardwicke.
Television
Television
For television SHINE produced and executive-produced LOGO Network’s first scripted series, “Noah’s Arc,” as well as produced the box-office darling and feature film follow up, “Noah’s Arc: Jumping the Broom.” In 2013 and 2015, SHINE produced eight episodes of “Comedy Underground,” Also on the comedic front, she produced “Caution Men Thinking,” featuring male comedians discussing love, life, and women.
In addition, SHINE produced the Lifetime TV Film “Pastor Brown,” which received critical praise and was a ratings hit. She is currently developing a series derived from the film but reset in the Apostolic/Evangelical Hispanic Church Community in the city of Los Angeles. SHINE’s ventures into the reality show formats also focus on extending her mission, and she is set to begin production on “Soul: Hollywood,” chronicling the restaurant’s opening and the rise of new African-American cooking star and entrepreneur Chef Yealang Smith, and a documentary chronicling the production of the Pam Grier biopic and which will focus an cult of personality and the search for an actress to be cast as the iconic star.

SHINE is the co-founder and a board member of The Blackhouse Foundation, a non-profit organization established to expand diversity at film festivals around the globe. At the 2018 Sundance Film Festival, Blackhouse celebrated its 12th year anniversary. As a direct result of SHINE’s work with Blackhouse, new records were set at Sundance in 2018 in terms of attendance, number of filmmakers and number of films exhibited by African-American filmmakers.
Blackhouse events at Sundance garnered SRO crowds and the foundation moves forward with plans for events at Tribeca, Cannes, LAIFF and the AFI Film Festival. SHINE lives in Los Angeles and is a proud member of the Director’s Guild of America and the Producer’s Guild of America.
Writing
Writing
On the literary front, Shine has been creating and writing an African-American adaptation inspired by the Agatha Christie stories of the “Miss Marple”. She joined forces with the estate and the resulting bible and treatment upon submission received the full approval from the Agatha Christie family and estate.
Talks are continuing to package and produce this new series of adaptations and reimagining’s set in Chinese Communities in San Francisco and Shanghai, a Hercule Poirot reimaging featuring a New Orleans Creole ATF officer who retires from the force following Katrina’s destruction, and “A Miss Marple” version set in Lagos, Nigeria.

SHINE is now producing a Latino Xmas Carol, "Mr. Avaros" and the "Ghosts of Christmas Past" with WWE and Sony Pictures this spring, a feature film with Lionsgate Entertainment, "Superstition: Final Chance," a thriller-horror film by Jeffrey Reddick of the Final Destination franchise and Steven Susco, writer of "The Grudge."
In addition there are the film projects in preproduction: "One Night," based upon a book from NY Times Best Seller author Eric Jerome Dickey, a Pam Grier biopic "My Life in Three Acts," a Chinese/American romantic comedy "Chinese Wedding." In development is "Veil," a feature film science fiction thriller written and to be produced and directed by actress Nicki Micheaux scheduled for production in spring of 2019.
